Factors Influencing the Choice of Micropiles

1. Physical considerations: Restricted access, remote access, close proximity to existing structures
2. Subsurface Conditions: Difficult geologic conditions (boulders in till or obstructions), Susceptibility of ground to liquefaction during pile driving
3. Environmental Conditions: Vibration or noise sensitive areas, hazardous or contaminated soils
4. Economics
5. Low mobilization compared to driven piling

Micropile Applications

  • Foundations for new structures
  • Underpinning existing foundations
  • Seismic retrofitting
  • Earth retention
  • Settlement reduction
  • Structural stability

On-site pre-production compression testing, as shown, was conducted to 150 Kips = 667 kN in order to confirm capacities.

Micropiling was considered economical here due to unsuitable soft sub-grade bearing soils, close proximity to existing foundations/sewer, obstructions in fills and low noise emissions.
